I finally opened up the Fedex box of schwag that I shipped home after the BlogHer13 conference…so let’s start giving some things away! It’s Friday and nothing says “weekend” to me like cracking open a new BOOK. How does this breezy beach read look to you?
Seriously, y’all…this is what G took to the beach on our vacation. I didn’t even understand the blurbs on the back but they were raves:
“this ready reference investigates the use of CO2 for the synthesis of carboxylates, carbonates, carbamates, isocyanates, and polymeric materials, as well as a solvent, in electro- and photoelectro-chemistry, biomass enhanced production and much more besides.”
Oh, oops. I should have put SPOILER ALERT before that last paragraph in case y’all didn’t know about the carboxylates. I apologize.
And I’m kidding! It’s Friday! Nobody wants to read about isocyanates, silly!
Here’s the book I got from St. Martin’s Press to pass along to my readers…the brand new Barbara Delinsky, “Sweet Salt Air”:
This blurb sounds more like it:
“On Quinnipeague, hearts open under the summer stars and secrets float in the Sweet Salt Air…
Charlotte and Nicole were once the best of friends, spending summers together in Nicole’s coastal island house off of Maine. But many years, and many secrets, have kept the women apart. A successful travel writer, single Charlotte lives on the road, while Nicole, a food blogger, keeps house in Philadelphia with her surgeon-husband, Julian. When Nicole is commissioned to write a book about island food, she invites her old friend Charlotte back to Quinnipeague, for a final summer, to help. Outgoing and passionate, Charlotte has a gift for talking to people and making friends, and Nicole could use her expertise for interviews with locals. Missing a genuine connection, Charlotte agrees.
But what both women don’t know is that they are each holding something back that may change their lives forever. For Nicole, what comes to light could destroy her marriage, but it could also save her husband. For Charlotte, the truth could cost her Nicole’s friendship, but could also free her to love again. And her chance may lie with a reclusive local man, with a heart to soothe and troubles of his own.
Bestselling author and master storyteller Barbara Delinsky invites you come away to Quinnipeague…to synthesize carboxylates.
I’ve got one copy to give away, so if you’d like it, leave a comment with the name of your favorite beach read! At 7pm tonight, I’ll let G choose a random winner from all the comments. Good luck!
Sounds good, especially now that I’m writing romance. My favorite beach read is whatever has been on my shelf all year that I haven’t gotten to. This year it was the only romance Pearl Buck wrote, The Long Love.
I am thinking about going back to Pearl Buck. I have only read The Good Earth and that was in 7th grade when I had zero connection to it.
Prince of Tides. Crazy, I know.
Love a good southern writer and something that doesn’t require too much effort! I’m thinking Ann Rivers Siddons or Dorothea Benton Frank.
Oh, I used to love me some Ann Rivers Siddons!
My favorite book in the Chemical series is the one where Carbon Dioxide goes to summer camp on Cape Cod and solves the mystery of the haunted lighthouse.
SNORT!!! I just started “Divergent” because of you and Katie. It’s a good read!
Getting back go Mary Higgins Clark. I forgot how many of her books I own until unpacking.
I have NEVER read anything by her! Are they creepy?
Galapagos by Vonnegut was my favorite beach read! 🙂
(I’m a fellow English major!)
Haven’t read that one….adding to my list! His “Slaughterhouse 5” was a never forget read for me.
Sorry, can’t name just 1 book. I would take any of the 3 books by Khaled Hosseini. He is a good writer! For rereads, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone with the Wind, or if I’m in the mood for weird/scary stuff, a book by Stephen King.
I just finished “Under the Dome.” Pretty good read! I don’t read much Steven King, but it’s always an interesting story.
As tempting as G’s read appears to be, it is way too easy for me to understand (tehehehehe) so you can just go ahead and add my entry to the secrets, estranged best friends, love book. I need to step out of my comfort zone, and read something complicated.
I will see if G can score you an extra copy of the Carbon Dioxide thriller!
Lately I have been reading books about preserving food, growing food, how to plan to grow your food, how to cook your food and how to preserve your food in Carbon Dioxide! I need a romance novel with a story line – quick!
You’re one step closer!
Since school has started back, I have delved once again into Beverly Cleary (with my kids, of course). Ashley, Mrs. Cotton would be quite proud ! My beach read this year was a chance meeting between me and an inviting Southern title. I enjoyed “Secrets over Sweet Tea” by Denise Hildreth Jones.
Vivi got the Beezus and Ramona books for her birthday!!!
Yay! Free books–’cause you are throwing in the chemistry one, too, right? Ugh. Just kidding! I have enjoyed most of Elin Hilderbrand’s books for beach reading. The worst “beach-reading” book I ever made the mistake of taking on vacation was The Lovely Bones. Not a bad book, just way too depressing for the beach!
Oh no! That was a great book but not exactly light hearted.
Mental Floss – cover to cover – whatever issue I can lay my hands on – old, new, whatever … can’t get enough
I love their website!
Yep. Mr. Miller got me caught “Under the Dome” this summer, too. Don’t know how I missed that book when it first came out. As for Mr. Ashley’s book…..huh?
Now I’m reading “Divergent” because of Jill and her daughter. This group of friends is exercising MIND CONTROL on us!
Ashley, you are going to have to add an additional tab for book suggestions and reviews.
Good idea!!!
And our winner is…..MICHELLE!
What should I do? I can send you a FB message with my address. Or I can pick it up somewhere (I’m local). Thanks! 🙂
I can’t believe I missed this thread and contest. I recently read, “State of Wonder”. It was excellent. Seriously, do you think G would let me borrow his book?
I’ll ask him! Y’all might be able to swap texts. Maybe he could even come to your class one day and blow some stuff up!
It is my gas, and mine only
