Portuguese Has a Word for This Feeling

Here’s a gift to you from G today. It’s pronounced “sow-dah-day.” Portuguese is the only language that has a noun for this feeling.

Take this word and tuck it into your heart. If you are missing someone, remember the joy and let it propel you.

I’m half Portuguese (paternal grandfather emigrated at 17 to Mass. from the Azores) but don’t know the language well. I love this new-to-me word.

Isn’t it beautiful? I got it from a Brasilian Portuguese speaker, but I think it’s common to the language.

I’m so deeply missing my daughter today, and I read this and just burst into all kinds of tears.

    Thank you.
